This story almost doesn’t make the three jelloid rating because the whole Ace being the captain story is, well, a bit wearing. She’s got more confidence than she displays, I think, in this particular story. I could see Peri being this uncertain in the captain’s chair but Ace? Ultimately the moderately humorous ending with the Grubs and Metraxi saves the story, but it’s not as interesting as it usually comes off. I do love how Raine is brought into the story and the Doctor and Ace wandering the ship but Victor’s character seems ludicrous – they would let someone like that free reign even after he’s proven unreliable? What sort of slap-dash organization is this? For all of Yanikov’s suspicions about Ace, he should be a little more conscious of his duty at the helm, to be honest.
