A Town Called Fortune (#5.05)

  Big Finish, Companion Chronicles

The 6th Doctor and Evelyn wander into a city by train, called Fortune, through a gold mine.  They are already on the wrong side of the people in charge before they even arrive and it goes straight into the action from there.  They meet Rachel Donovan on the train and she is there to find and confront her father’s killer.  Naturally the Doctor is accused of killing him and obvious bad guy in the mayor, causes all sorts of mischief.

I LOVE Evelyn and Maggie Stables does a fabulous job of reading the story except for her Doctor voice.  I love how the action moves, with Rachel Ann, Maisie, and Evelyn finding out clues and everyone coming together in the end.  And it all comes back to the human factor – killed for the love of a woman by a jealous man.  The action is great, the mystery resolved nicely, but the final moments are a bit trite.  There are a few things I just didn’t buy into but I think they had to be a bit stereotypical of an American town in the “wild west” because there just wasn’t time to flesh things out better.  Still would listen to this one again, though. ;)
