Big Finish Main Range
This is a spooky audio story where Hex gets to go off on his own with a complete nut job, Emerson Whytecrag III, who was threatening to conquer the world and thought he was smarter than anyone else around. On the audio extras the actor, Stuart Milligan, says that Whytecrag knows he’s smarter than everyone else, including the Doctor. Really. Perhaps because of his long experience in the universe, I always think of the Doctor as smarter than everyone else around. I just wonder about the script so perhaps I’ll actually read this one!
We get to see a rather human side of Ace as she tries to help CP throughout the whole of this story, though she’s only successful to a certain degree. The Doctor understands her much as he does at the end of A Death in the Family, in a sad sort of way that he really doesn’t understand. This story doesn’t live up to the grandeur that is A Death in the Family but it’s a crazy adventure in the ice for them. The bad aliens are pretty menacing but at the same time, I didn’t think that the Doctor couldn’t win for a moment. So I like the character development for Ace and Hex but I do wonder why the Doctor doesn’t just pop himself out of the straight jacket. That seems like the sort of thing he’d do…
